Ayumu Aikawa is a zombie resurrected by a necromancer named Eucliwood Hellscythe after being killed by a serial killer. As he tries to make the best of his undead life, he encounters a Masō-Shōjo (魔装少女?, lit. Magical Garment Girl, a pun on "mahō shōjo", meaning magical girl) named Haruna and inadvertently takes her magic powers, being forced to become a Masō-Shōjo (and thereby crossdress) in the process. With Eucliwood, Haruna, and a vampire ninja named Seraphim living with him, Ayumu helps battle demons known as Megalos while trying to figure out the mystery behind his own death.

Characters

Main characters

Ayumu Aikawa (相川 歩 Aikawa Ayumu?)
Voiced by: Takuma Terashima (drama CD), Junji Majima (anime) (Japanese), Austin Tindle[5] (English)
Ayumu is a high school boy who was killed by a serial killer and resurrected as a zombie by the necromancer, Eucliwood Hellscythe. As a zombie, he is near invincible and can exceed the limits of the human body, giving him great physical strength. However, he still feels pain (but gets over it very quickly) and will also dry out in the sunlight. His body is also weak against fire and tends to break down if used to its utmost limit. There are also various aspects of his zombie nature that Ayumu has yet to discover, such as the ability to absorb magic (Stronger magic absorbs weaker magic). As a result of absorbing Haruna's magic, Ayumu is forced to become a Masō-Shōjo, pink frilly outfit and all, in order to fight Megalos.
Throughout his encounters, it is shown that he is rather a unique zombie, which is possible due to the powerful magic Eucliwood used to revive him. In episode 11 of the anime adaptation when Mystletainn recognizes Haruna as its owner again, it enables them to transform into Masō-Shōjos in tandem right before they fight Yoruno. In episode 12, he temporarily borrows Eu's powers but, much to Sera's chagrin and ire, winds up having perverted thoughts that affect all girls within the vicinity. In the manga, it is shown that Ayumu can kill Megalos with his zombie powers without becoming a Masō-Shōjo himself. He also cannot feel any pain, and when he absorbed Haruna's magic it prevented her from using/touching Mystletainn. When Ayumu turns into a Masō-Shōjo, he still has his zombie powers, but loses some negative effects, such as a weakness to sunlight. He is also more aggressive in the manga, as seen in his fight against Kyoko when it takes the appearance and intervention of Ariel to stop him from killing her, whereas in the anime he refrains from killing her for good after figuring out that she was down to her very last life. He has a hidden talent to break-dance and was able to impress Eu but was asked to not do that again.
Haruna (ハルナ?)
Voiced by: Kaoru Mizuhara (drama CD), Iori Nomizu (anime) (Japanese), Jād Saxton[5] (English)
Haruna is a Masō-Shōjo from Villiers who wields a chainsaw named Mystletainn (ミストルティン Misutorutin?) and battles demons known as Megalos. She can also use her magic to repair damage caused from her battles and erase people's memories, the latter ability which becomes useful to Ayumu at the end of episode 1 (as revealed in episode 2). She was originally ordered by her teacher, Dai-sensei, to go to Kyoto to get some tofu, but she ended up in Tokyo instead. After first encountering Ayumu following a fight with a demon, her magical powers are absorbed by him, due to the fact the magic Eucliwood used to revive him is stronger than hers. As she tries to figure out this situation, she appoints Ayumu to fight the Megalos in her place as a Masō-Shōjo and starts living with him. She is a good cook, though is usually limited to just making fried eggs. Despite being a self-proclaimed genius, she has trouble remembering people's names or important details of assignments, since she only remembers what she deems interesting and forgets everything else. Ayumu's name is an exception to this, suggesting that she cares about him. She appears to have some feelings for Ayumu, showing jealousy when he is close with Yuki and having a dream of kissing Ayumu. She is jealous of Mael for her relationship with Ayumu, even asking him to kiss her.[6][7] Eventually, Mystletainn recognized her as its owner again, enabling herself and Ayumu to transform into Masō-Shōjos in tandem in time for the final battle against Yoruno.
When Iori Nomizu was asked which part of her was similar to Haruna, the character she was voicing, she stated that she and Haruna were both very energetic.[8]
Eucliwood Hellscythe (ユークリウッド・ヘルサイズ Yūkuriuddo Herusaizu?)
Voiced by: Yukari Tamura (drama CD), Midori Tsukimiya (anime) (Japanese), Cherami Leigh[5] (English)
Delusion Eu (Season 1) Voiced by: Kotono Mitsuishi, Mika Kanai, Tomoko Kaneda, Yūko Minaguchi, Satomi Kōrogi, Sakura Tange, Yuki Matsuoka, Noriko Hidaka, Fumi Hirano
Delusion Eu (Season 2) Voiced by: Aya Hisakawa, Kikuko Inoue, Omi Minami, Kimiko Koyama, Mariko Kouda, Etsuko Kozakura, Chisa Yokoyama, Mayumi Iizuka, Sumi Shimamoto, Yui Horie, Rei Sakuma
Eucliwood, called Eu (ユー ?) for short, is a necromancer who brought Ayumu back to life to be her guard and has been living with him since. Her magic is so powerful that she has to wear heavy armor and suppress her emotions in order to control it. Her words also carry strong magic, and she is able to kill someone just by saying "Die" (for example, when she takes on Kyoko and says "Die" multiple times, draining the latter's life supply), so she avoids talking and instead communicates through written notes, mostly pertaining to her appetite. She experiences severe pain whenever her magic is activated, and she claims that even if she were to die her magic would continue uncontrolled. She is also capable of becoming a Masō-Shōjo, and it is implied that she interned at Matelis under Ariel. It is shown that she does care about Ayumu even though she considers him to be her servant, therefore she may have feelings for Ayumu, but cannot express them currently. Ayumu constantly provides her with comfort when she thinks about her many insecurities and she is shown to take these feelings to heart. Out of all of the girls, Eu seems to have the closest relationship with him. She does not like people talking about death or telling them to go die since, as she takes on the pain of anyone she heals, revives or kills, she understands the pain of dying despite being immortal herself.
Ayumu often daydreams about her behaving like a visual novel character and speaking in a cutesy manner (voiced by a different voice actor in each episode of the anime). In episode 11 of the anime adaptation, she spoke to Ayumu for the first time, indicating that she has gained some control over her magic. How or what she did to control it is a mystery; however, she sometimes forgets she can control it, as seen in episode 12 when she has to use a machine developed by Ariel in order to compete with the others in an idol singing competition. The machine temporarily transfers her powers to Ayumu; unfortunately for him, his thoughts quickly spiral out of hand.
Seraphim (セラフィム Serafimu?)
Voiced by: Shizuka Itō (drama CD), Yōko Hikasa (anime) (Japanese), Morgan Garrett[5] (English)
Seraphim, "Sera" (セラ?) for short, is a well-endowed vampire ninja (吸血忍者 Kyūketsu-ninja?) who combines her Secret Sword Technique: Swallow Cut (秘剣 燕返し Hiken Tsubamegaeshi?, English anime: "Swallow Return Strike") and ninja reflexes with her vampire powers to fight her enemies. She is able to form a pair of bat wings and a katana out of several leaves. Her signature outfit consists of a yellow spaghetti-strapped top that reveals her midriff and dark blue jeans (this outfit is the one she wears most often in promotional material). As a vampire, she periodically requires blood to stay alive, and can anesthetize people with a kiss in order to numb the pain from neck bites. She does this with other girls, since kissing a boy would symbolize marriage in her cult's rules. She comes to Ayumu's house to serve Eucliwood, though when rejected, she ends up being Ayumu's servant in hopes she can change her mind. She is rather cold towards Ayumu, constantly calling him a dung beetle (クソ虫 Kuso-mushi?), though has a healthy respect for his combat abilities. In episode 9, she has a brief argument with Ayumu over her participation in the contract Sarasvati put out on Eu and, on moral grounds, decides to let Eu live. She is killed by Yoruno in episode 10, only to come back to life when Eu pricks her own finger to supply blood for her—blood which will ultimately make her the key to sealing the gates of the underworld one episode later. In later novels, she seems to be developing feelings for Ayumu, slowly becoming more of a tsundere than when they first met. In episode 8 of Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka? of the Dead, it was confirmed by Kyoko that Seraphim does love Ayumu.
Mael Strom (メイル・シュトローム Meiru Shutorōmu?) / Yuki Yoshida (吉田 友紀 Yoshida Yuki?)
Voiced by: Mamiko Noto (drama CD), Hisako Kanemoto (anime) (Japanese), Brittney Karbowski[5] (English)
A vampire ninja from a different faction from Seraphim's who is also a student in Ayumu's high school, where she is known as Yuki Yoshida. Because of how this name is written, she is often nicknamed "Tomonori" (トモノリ?), which she only allows Ayumu to call her. She is able to use tonkotsu ramen soup to instantly defeat Megalos, though the explanation behind it is too advanced for even her to understand, and has a machine which sprays said soup over the city whenever a horde of Megalos attack. However in the anime, the machine has failed (hinted to be destroyed by Seran's faction because it might upset the environment), and thus the project was given up.[6] As a result of accidentally kissing Ayumu when he was pushed by Haruna, they are technically declared married by her faction's customs, and she constantly acts like a wife while at school. Even though she accepts her position as wife early on due to custom, she eventually develops strong feelings for Ayumu due to his kind and courageous character. She is rather tomboyish, speaking with the term "ore" when talking about herself.
Sarasvati (サラスバティ Sarasubati?) / Kirara Hoshikawa (星川 輝羅々 Hoshikawa Kirara?)
Voiced by: Aya Gōda (Japanese), Caitlin Glass[5] (English)
Sarasvati, "Saras" (サラス Sarasu?) for short, is a vampire ninja and Sera's superior who lives in the human world as Kirara Hoshikawa. She puts a contract out on Eu for being a Megalo magnet and has Sera do the job. She isn't too happy to see that Sera had abandoned the mission, though while she considers Sera a traitor for abandoning the mission and puts a hit on her for the effort, Saras saves her and Haruna from Yoruno later on. She later revokes the hit on Eu (and, by extension, the hit on Sera) following the success of her and Mael Strom's factions combined in sealing the gates of the underworld (though Sera was ultimately the key, since she had Eu's blood flowing through her veins following a fatal injury incurred by Yoruno). She becomes a major character in Jigoku Hen, as well as later light novels. Later, she falls in love with Ayumu (to be more precise, love at first sight when she sees his butt and curve line, but properly falls in love with him nonetheless). She leads a double life as the idol singer Lovely Kirara, garnering much popularity in the human world.
